The way we buy has changed. Over the past few years the shift into online shopping has grown. It can often be tough knowing whether you’re selecting the right size, particularly if you’re a wide fit.

Of course, buying instore comes with it’s pros. There is nothing like being able to touch and feel what you are buying. A shop assistant, if you find a good one can be a wealth of knowledge and recommendations. But finding a good selection of choice, in your size can be a challenge.
 
Online can feel daunting, feeling alone in your decision and a gamble on knowing whether your shoes are going to look like the photo.
 
But once they arrive you can take your time to deliberate without that ‘ever-so-helpful’ shop assistant breathing down your neck.
Try them on with the outfit you’re planning on wearing them with, and they’re likely to be fresh out of the box.

1. Measure your feet the right way

 
Ever tried on a pair of jeans in one shop to find you’re a completely different size in another?
 
Wide fit sizing can often be as broad a term as plus size clothing is from one brand to another.

2. Measure your feet in the evening

 
Have you noticed shoes that can fit you in the morning can start to rub and pinch as the day goes on? This is because your feet swell during the day.
 
Your feet are going to be the most sensitive in the evening. The simple answer, try them on when they are at their worst, you’ll know whether they’re going to cause you problems.
 

3. Measure both feet

 
It’s natural and more common than you think, your feet are likely to be a different measurement from left to right. Always go with the sizing on the bigger foot. You can manage with a bit of room, a shoe that’s too small will pinch and cause you problems.
 
 

4. If in doubt…ask

 
In this new online shopping minefield, we forget that there are still people you can ask. A good retailer will have a customer care team. They are there to answer your questions, not just chase your returns. This is what they are paid for, use them.
 

5.Research the material

 
It’s always a gamble whether they really are going to look like the image when buying online. Research the material. You will more find details about the material, trims and any key points about the shoe in the product description.
 

6. Adjustability

 
Nobody has the same shape foot or calf. Finding boots for a wide calf whether you have a sport calf or a plus sized calf can be a challenge.  Always look through the product images for adjustability. You will often find elastic panels, laces and other ways of being able to adjust to your shape.
 

7. Returns policy

This goes without saying. Any retailer that doesn't allow you to return your purchase, something's up. A good pair of shoes is an investment and finding the right fit imperative.
